Biking at Gura Apelor Lake – planning your bike ride adventure

Before embarking on your bike ride adventure, research the area and trails, plan logistics, ensure your bike is suitable for the trail; consider safety precautions such as wearing a helmet and protective gear, bringing water and snacks, checking the weather forecast, maintaining a steady pace, being aware of surroundings, and carrying a basic first-aid kit. As for the trail we picked, well, this is relatively easy because there are only two available options:
Trail 1 – is on the right side of the lake and is 8 km/ 5 miles long;
Trail 2 – is on the left side of the lake and is 16 km/ 10 miles long.
In both cases, there is a forest road you can ride on. While it may not be exceptional, it is ideal for a bike ride in nature. We called them Trail 1 and 2 to differentiate between the two, but there is no marking; you just follow the road for as long as it goes.
Once you arrive at the dam there is a parking lot where you can leave the car. Trail 1 starts at the barrier on the right side of the Gura Apelor Lake. For Trail 2 you need to cross the dam.

Gura Apelor Lake –Trail 1 (right side of the lake)

We picked Trail 1 for two reasons: it is short (9 km/5.6 miles), and the chances of meeting a car are slim because the road is closed to traffic. The only vehicles that ride on that road belong to the company that takes care of the dam on the lake, and that happens very rarely. In the not-very-distant future, we plan on exploring Trail 2 as well. But for now, it’s just Trail 1.
We started in the morning, and it took us a while on the road, but we were in no hurry. We stooped to admire the landscape, take photos, and eat wild raspberries because it was full of raspberries in August. It was also very hot, but at the end of the road, you can have a cooling bath in one of the three mountain rivers that feed the lake. The water was icy but really pleasant. After a while, we came back. This time, it is faster since most of the road is going down. But be careful because speed can become a problem. Take it slowly. It’s a pleasure ride not a competition.
